Connah’s Quay Nomads defeated Aberystwyth Town by six goals to one on Friday evening at Park Avenue in the JD Welsh Premier League.
Goals from Callum Morris and Andy Owens gave Nomads the lead at half time, with further strikes from Michael Wilde, Michael Bakare, Michael Parker, and Rob Hughes confirming a resounding win that keeps the Deesiders top of the league.
The Nomads came into the live Sgorio Facebook game looking to stay top of the JD Welsh Premier League following an impressive 4-1 victory over Bala Town on New Year’s Day.
Andy Morrison named an unchanged line up after that victory, whilst Aberystwyth, who were gunning for a victory to stay in the race for the final top six place, started a number of familiar faces including ex-Nomads keeper Terry McCormick, academy product Ryan Edwards and 2016 play off winner Wes Baynes.
With the fixture underway, it was Nomads who started brightest with a large share of possession in the Aberystwyth end. Inside the first minute, Andy Owens had a powerful volley dip towards goal but go over the bar, before Bakare threatened with a cross into the Black and Green’s area.
In the seventh minute Nomads saw a good chance to go ahead, when a misplaced clearance from Terry McCormick went to the feet of Andy Owens, whose first time strike from 18 yards out went wide.
Nomads’ ever-presence in the Aberystwyth end paid off in the 14th, when Andy Owens was brought down in the area and referee Tom Owen pointed to the spot.
Callum Morris stepped up and sent his kick to the bottom right corner, where it brushed the inside of the post before going in to confirm Nomads’ 0-1 lead.

After the opener, Aberystwyth started to grow into the game, with Declan Walker having a shot held by 10 yards out in the 17th minute before having a penalty appeal dismissed on 19 minutes.
The Nomads were then dealt a blow when captain George Horan was forced off with injury, with Declan Poole brought on to replace him.
Andy Morrison’s side continued to attack the home end with a strong passing display all over the field and the likes of Andy Owens and Ryan Wignall cutting into the Aberystwyth area.
Their second goal came in the 32nd minute, after Andy Owens took advantage of a rebound at close range. Michael Bakare dispossessed a defender, passing to Andy Owens who was denied by McCormick from eight yards.
McCormick then pushed the ball to his left where Wignall was waiting to send an angled effort in, with this shot cleared off the line but sent to Andy Owens, who struck the ball high into the net.

Boosted by their goal, the Nomads nearly scored a third two minutes later when Callum Morris laid on Ryan Wignall, who ran into the Aberystwyth area to send a first time effort against the post from seven yards out.
Despite Nomads’ dominance, the Black and Greens got themselves back into the game in the 38th, when after a run from Geoff Kellaway, Porya Ahmadi sent a low shot past Danby and into the bottom left corner of the net from the edge of the area.
And Aberystwyth nearly scored two inside two minutes, when after hitting Nomads on the break, they sent another low strike from around 15 yards out just wide of John Danby’s right post.
The game was now end to end, with Ryan Wignall having a chance to restore Nomads’ two goal lead cleared off the line on 40 minutes.
After beating a defender using the bounce of the ball, he sent a lobbed effort over McCormick which bounded towards the goal, only to be cleared off the line at the last minute.
At half time Nomads’ lead was intact, but they were wary of the need to reassert their dominance against an Aberystwyth side that had ended the first 45 minutes strongly.
Nomads made a substitution at the break, with Jonny Spittle coming on in place of Ryan Wignall.
After the restart, Nomads forced two set pieces with a corner and throw in in Aberystwyth’s final third, as the Seasiders also looked for a way past the Nomads’ defence, with John Disney working well to contain forward Geoff Kellaway.
It was Nomads who found a way through via Michael Wilde in the 65th minute. From a long Andy Owens throw in flicked on by Michael Parker, Wilde was able to turn and strike from inside the six yard box to make it 1-3.

On 72 minutes, the Nomads were forced into their final substitution, when substitute Declan Poole had to come off with an injury with Rob Hughes his replacement.
After an Andy Owens cross glanced across the face of goal in the 76th minute, Michael Bakare followed up to seal Nomads’ fourth in the 78th. After having an initial shot blocked, he dribbled through the defence to drag the ball onto his left foot, and send an effort into the bottom left corner.

With the game fully under Nomads control, they continued to control possession and were regularly inside the Aberystwyth half during the final ten minutes.
Their strong hold on the game yielded two more goals in injury time, with Michael Parker finding the ball come to him in front of goal to send it in the 92nd minute.
Rob Hughes then took advantage of a great run down the left wing and byline from Michael Bakare, who lifted the ball to Hughes allowing him to volley a shot in from near the penalty spot on 93 minutes.

The victory sees Nomads stay top of the JD Welsh Premier League ahead of the final game of phase one, where they travel to face Carmarthen Town AFC for a 7:30pm kick off at Richmond Park.
