Nomads take a point from Penybont

Connah's Quay Nomads drew 0-0 with Penybont at the SDM Glass Stadium in the JD Cymru Premier on Saturday afternoon.

The match, which was Nomads' first ever away fixture at Penybont, ended in a goalless stalemate to see both sides take a point.

Andy Morrison's side went into the game following their Nathaniel MG Cup semi final success over Bala Town, which set up a final against STM Sports. They returned to league action still yet to lose a game, and top of the table with 33 points from 16 games.

Penybont sat 10th in the league, and were looking for a win to continue to bridge the gap between themselves and the relegation zone.

Nomads were forced to make a change early on in the game, with Danny Holmes forced off with an injury after 10 minutes, and Callum Roberts replacing him.

Penybont and the visiting Nomads' disciplined shapes meant there would be no major chance on goal until 20 minutes, when a Penybont effort flicked off the crossbar.

In the 23rd, Jamie Insall had a header saved by keeper Wilson, and as Nomads began to dominate possession, they won a free kick on 27 minutes on the edge of the Penybont area.

Connah's Quay were regularly getting into the host's final third, winning four consecutive corners after half an hour, but none could infiltrate the Penybont area as their search for the opener went on.

The second half started with a chance for Nomads almost immediately when Jamie Insall ran down the right wing to set up Callum Morris who was denied Wilson.

With an hour played, the game remained goalless, but Nomads kept their composure to put on a strong passing display all over the field. Michael Bakare then joined the effort to break the deadlock, coming on to replace Morris.

On 67 minutes, Sameron Dool set up Michael Wilde, but his shot curled into the side netting to keep the game level.

The final 20 minutes saw Nomads keep up their efforts in front of the Penybont goal, but the host's resolute defending kept the game at 0-0 up to and throughout injury time.

With 90 minutes played, there was late drama as Wilde was shown a red card for a handball, despite claims the ball had already gone out of play.

In the 91st, Callum Roberts went close to scoring an injury time winner with a cross-come-shot that went off the crossbar, meaning Andy Morrison's side were forced to settle with a point in South Wales.

The result continues Nomads' unbeaten season so far, and keeps them top of the JD Cymru Premier. They will again head south next week in JD Welsh Cup third round action for a first ever meeting with Abertillery Bluebirds for a 2:30pm kick off on Saturday 7 December.
