Nomads lose out in screen test

The Nomads' recent poor form was extended on Sunday afternoon when they were defeated 2-1 by Rhyl in front of the S4C cameras at the Corbett Sports Stadium. Two goals from Jason Oswell were enough to secure three points for the home side, with Gary O'Toole's second half goal not enough for the visitors.

This game was of much importance as the two sides have the exact same ambitions, to claim three points and send themselves to the top 6 of the Welsh Premier League.  With Rhyl a strong physical side with the likes of Rimmer and Astles in the defence, The Nomads started with all main attackers on the field with Hayes, O'Toole and Everall all starting.

The home side started the strongest and were creating chances against a Nomads team that wasn't giving away anything in the early stages of the game. With 22 minutes gone Rhyl went 1-0 up through a route one style goal, with a ball sent over The Nomads' defence for Jason Oswell to all too easily round McCormick and slot the ball into the net.

Rhyl were dominant throughout the first half and were soon to be 2-0 up, with the home support believing for a few short moments they were, when Mark Cadwallader scored a goal that was to be disallowed by the assistant referee for offside.

Rhyl's second came from the same man who scored the first, Jason Oswell. After Rhyl were awarded a penalty when the referee spotted a handball inside the box from Chris Rowntree.  The penalty was superbly saved from Terry Mcormick, but he could not stop Oswell from scoring the rebound seconds later.

The second half started with the Lilywhites in a comfortable lead and The Nomads needing to do something to get back into the game for a vital point at the least.  Danny Forde was soon introduced from the bench with Craig Jones making way.

The Nomads did see better play in the second half but none of which ever made Rhyl look like they were going to give the result away. The Lilywhites' towering back four kept closing down darting runs from Simon Everall and seemed always there to block any Nomads shot.

Rhyl should have gone further in front and Oswell should have completed his hat-trick, but curled an easy chance wide of the goal following a loose Jack Rowlands ball, and a few minutes later he was further denied as his shot struck the post and bounced clear.

The Nomads' spell of attacking play towards the end of the game did pay off when with around 10 minutes to go Gary O'Toole getting a goal, after Danny Desormeaux nodded down a Paul Mooney through ball for O'Toole to finish neatly below Rhyl 'keeper Ramsay.

The goal gave The Nomads a boost, but the game ended with the away team's attacks being too little too late, with the referee ending the game with Rhyl 2-1 up and the three points staying at Corbett Sports Stadium.

This result gives The Nomads their fifth straight defeat, and now over a month without a win. The Nomads look to find their feet down south next week against bottom of the table Afan Lido.
