Aden Shannon's stunning 71st-minute strike broke the hearts of his former club Welshpool on Deeside.
The striker only left Maesydre in the summer and repaid gap Connah's Quay manager Steve O'Shaughnessy's faith with a superb 30-yarder, which flew past the flailing arms of keeper Danny Jones into the top corner to settle the contest.
The Lilywhites threatened briefly before half-time when Paul Roberts just failed to connect with a Will Thomas cross and Andy Davies was denied by on-loan Wrexham keeper when through on goal.
But, although Steve Rogers had hit the side netting for 'Pool, Nomads dominated for most of the contest and Shannon had seen an earlier effort turned onto a post.
Liam Loughlin and Keiran Quinn were both over the target from distance in the second-half, while Quinn saw another effort saved.
Andy Alston was narrowly over the bar with his effort and, after Shannon had found the target, Phil Doran then went close to adding a second, but his long range shot was well saved by keeper Jones.
