Saturday afternoon saw The Nomads lose out to Warrington Town in the penultimate friendly game of the pre season campaign.
The Nomads started with the same lineup that performed well at Stockport County a week earlier, however they met tough opposition in Warrington Town, who earlier in the week had defeated Salford City 2-1.
The first half-chance of the game fell to Kevin McIntyre on the fourth minute as he hammered a shot goalwards, only to see it sail over the crossbar, and just two minutes later, a loose ball out of defence from The Nomads gave Warrington a key opportunity to open the scoring, but The Yellow's attacked sliced his shot wide from inside the box letting The Nomads' defence off the hook. Warrington were forced to make an early substitution on the eleventh minute as their central midfielder wearing 4 was forced to leave and was replaced by 18. Following this early break in play, the home side resumed the game the stronger side, creating some good opportunities which saw a succession of corners tipped onto the roof of the net by Nomads 'keeper, John Danby.
The pressure was mounting, and on 34 minutes, the home side took a deserved lead, as Warrington broke through The Nomads' defence, forcing a fantastic one-on-one save out of John Danby in The Nomads' goal, only to see the ball drop to the feet of Keiron Kilheeney who slotted the ball beyond The Nomads' defenders on the line. Just four minutes later, and the home side's lead was doubled as Warrington's number 7 broke down the right wing, and following some neat footwork, centred the ball to an unmarked Quirk, who entered the field as the 11th minute substitute, to simply slot home beyond Danby. Things could have got worse for The Nomads a minute later as another Warrington attack, this time down the left wing, saw a cross narrowly missed by a Yellow's striker in front of goal.
The Nomads came out with the words of Allan Bickerstaff seemingly ringing in their ears, and it showed in their second half performance, as they were a much more attacking force, with Callum Morris stinging the palms of the home 'keeper just four minutes into the second half. It was a signal of intent from Morris, and shortly after, following some great work down the left from Kevin McIntyre, Jay Crowther headed just over from eight yards out. Crowther was again setting his sights on goal as he unleashed a shot from the edge of the box, only to see it edge over the bar again. The Nomads were not to be denied however, and on the 68th minute, Callum Morris burst down The Nomads right before breaking into the box beyond two men and picking out Kevin McIntyre's near post run to make it 2-1.
The Nomads continued to press, however the only other chances in the game fell to Ashley Ruane against his old club, as he attempted to flick a near post corner goalwards, only to see it land on the roof of the net, and in the last five minutes, the ball fell to Ruane on the edge of his box, but his placed attempt unfortunately didn't trouble the home goalkeeper.
The Nomads now look to their final pre-season friendly against a Wrexham XI next Sunday at Deeside Stadium with a 1pm kick off.
