The Nomads were defeated by four goals to two at Newtown on Saturday afternoon. Four first half goals from Oswell, Mitchell, Mills-Evans and Boundford proved enough to secure victory for the home side despite two goals from Davies and Morris in the second half.
This game was looked forward to by many Nomads who felt after two great wins over Caernarfon Town and Port Talbot, a result could be achieved against a Newtown side who had been struggling for recent form. The Nomads were taken charge of by Interim Manager Jay Catton, in his third game as caretaker for the Club.
The game began and although The Nomads immediately won a corner from a Les Davies run, nothing came of the set piece. Newtown then had their go, with Matty Owen intercepting a defensive header from Sean Smith to run towards goal and send an effort wide.
Jason Oswell however made no mistake in the 11th minute when he headed a cross from Jack Steven Hughes past Danby from around five yards. The Nomads looked to retaliate via Baynes who sent a well executed shot to Newtown keeper Jones who stopped the shot.
The Nomads were then again punished by Neil Mitchell, who added to his goal tally against The Nomads after a great goal on the opening day of the season, when after an initial shot hit the post he stepped up in centre of the area to slot the ball home in the 16th minute.
Two goals in under 20 minutes had already stunned the travelling Nomads, but The Robins had yet more wounds to inflict. Matty Owen came close to scoring when he broke free and tried to chip the ball over the oncoming Danby, who produced a great save to deny him.
Yet four minutes later Newtown found their third via Kieran Mills-Evans, who headed to score inside the area from a Craig Williams free kick from around 25 yards.
Paul Linwood then had a great opportunity to instigate a comeback in the 34th minute, when he found himself clear in front of goal on the left side of the Newtown area, but sent the ball over the crossbar.
It was then that some of the away support began to sense it wouldn’t be The Nomads' day after Rushton had already been denied a goal in a one-on-one situation with Jones in the Newtown goal.
The Nomads then had more woe heaped upon them by Boundford, who, assisted by Mitchell, sent a clinical shot into the bottom left corner of The Nomads' goal from around 15 yards.
Four goals down at the interval, it was fair to say things hadn’t gone to plan with The Nomads unable to produce decisive efforts on goal up against a strong and determined Newtown side.
At the start of the second half Catton introduced Ruane and McIntyre in place of Linwood and Harrison, but the new introductions could do little to have immediate effect on play as Newtown were well in control.
The Nomads did begin to press the Robins yet they could not find the target despite earning three consecutive corners around the 60 minute mark of the game.
Callum Morris finally managed to reduce the deficit when he rose high to connect with a Sean Smith cross into the Newtown box. More changes were made with Sean Miller replaced by Jack Chambers, who celebrated his 18th birthday with a first team appearance.
The Nomads' goal had done little to disrupt the game, which was a milder spectacle than the first half with Newtown controlling the field. Yet whispers of a comeback were on the cards after Les Davies powered a strike past a cluster of players into the Newtown net in the 73rd minute.
With 15 minutes to go, The Nomads were energised and began to play more football in the Newtown half. Yet the home defence remained resilient with a Rushton shot blocked before a Ruane effort had the same fate.
The Nomads' final effort of the game was a free kick just outside of the Newtown area which Wes Baynes sent over for a goal kick, after which referee Ashley Jones ended the proceedings.
This was a disappointing result for a Nomads side who failed to be clinical where the Robins had succeeded. They move onto their next league fixture at home to Carmarthen Town on the 7th November.
