Late Denbigh strike topples Nomads

The Nomads crashed out of theWord Cup semi finals on Wednesday evening, losing 1-0 to Denbigh Town.  A Sam Jones goal in the 83rd minute was enough for the home side to secure a position in the final against The New Saints.

The game was looked upon as a landmark game in the history of both clubs, with The Nomads having last been in a league cup final in 1996.

Despite wet and windy weather, the game went ahead as a crowd of 550 watched on.  The Nomads started the stronger side, with Crowther having a shot saved in the sixth minute, the first chance of the game.

Sean Smith went on a run towards goal, but the Denbigh 'keeper Elliot Power ran out and got to the ball first.  Les Davies then sent a powerful volley at the centre of the goal but Power was once again on hand to save.

In a half where The Nomads were largely in control, Denbigh counter attacked on a couple of occasions but were found offside on both.

In the second half, The Nomads came out of the stocks first with Ruane counter attacking from a Denbigh free kick, going round the 'keeper only to be stopped by a clearance from the Denbigh defence, who ran back in time to get rid of the danger.

From a Nomads corner Davies sent a shot that looked a certain goal - but a Denbigh defender was on hand to clear the ball off the line in a goalmouth scramble.

On yet another attack, Davies ran into the box and was brought down. The referee pointed to the penalty spot, but Ruane missed the golden opportunity to get The Nomads ahead in the 65th minute as Power dived to his left to deny The Nomads' substitute.

As the game went on, Denbigh grew more and more confident as The Nomads just couldn't seem to find the goal. Immediately after the penalty, the home side saw a shot sail just over the crossbar from 30 yards.

The Nomads continued to press with a succession of corner kicks, but could not find the breakthrough they needed.  With time ticking in the game, Sam Jones scored for Denbigh in the 83rd minute.

After a break, he found himself in space inside The Nomads' area to simply pass the ball into the bottom left corner of the net and send the home support into raptures.

The Nomads continued to attack, but their time and luck were out with Denbigh retaining their lead after four minutes of injury time.

This was a disappointing evening for The Nomads who had played well for large periods of the game, but failed to find the target upfront. Their next game is a live S4C Sgorio match, played at 5:15pm at Deeside Stadium on Saturday 21 November.
