Nomads on top at Bastion Gardens

The Nomads progressed to the fourth round of the JD Welsh Cup on Saturday afternoon after a 3-0 win over Prestatyn Town at Bastion Gardens.  Goals from Callum Morris and Nick Rushton ensured The Nomads were to stay in Wales' premier domestic cup competition.

Despite playing Cymru Alliance outfit, Prestatyn Town, a tough match was forecast with Prestatyn having gone on a run of 10 games won in all competitions. Following a disappointing loss in the Welsh Premier League to MBi Llandudno, The Nomads were looking to bounce back by kick starting a cup campaign.

The Nomads announced a strong starting line up with Davies and Rushton leading the field. Recent loan signing Robbie Parry also made his first start for The Nomads.

The game began in windy conditions, with the first real chance going to the home side when Beattie ran down the left wing and sent a shot towards goal, which Danby saved.  The Nomads also showed their attacking intentions with two free kicks awarded in succession near the Prestatyn area.

After Baynes sent a free kick into the Prestatyn area, Les Davies was fouled and the referee pointed to the spot.  Callum Morris stepped up and scored to put The Nomads ahead in the 14th minute.

Despite holding a one goal advantage, the game remained even for most of the first half with Prestatyn persistent and tenacious when in The Nomads' half. Callum Morris almost got his second goal of the day when he sent a diving header over the home goal.

In wet conditions, the competitive nature of the game was clear with many tackles applied from both sides on the pitch, with Paul Linwood shown a yellow card for a tackle on the halfway line.

At the end of the half, Davies attacked the Prestatyn goalmouth and was once again fouled, which subsequently gave The Nomads their second penalty of the game.  Morris could now get his second just as he got his first, and did precisely that with a powerful shot heading towards the roof of keeper Jones' net.

The second half began and neither side held back, with both Prestatyn and Nick Rushton for The Nomads seeing efforts on goal go wide. In the 54th minute Danby produced the save of the game when he tipped over a curling effort from around 15 yards.

After an hour played the adverse weather conditions increasingly effected the game with numerous high balls sent in different directions by the wind, seen when a Nomads free kick on the halfway line ended up back in their area with Danby.

After maintaining a strong presence in the game despite the 0-2 scoreline, Prestatyn were dealt a serious blow when Connor Shackleton was sent off for a heavy tackle on Robbie Parry.

Things then went from bad to worse for The Seasiders when three minutes after Shackleton's dismissal Rushton scored The Nomads' third and final goal of the day.  From a throw in, he picked the ball up on the outside of the area and coolly slotted his effort into the bottom left corner of Jones' net.

With 10 minutes of the game to go, The Nomads had finally gained full dominance of the fixture and only had to keep the majority of possession to see the game out. Ruane then replaced Morris in the final event of a comprehensive JD Welsh Cup win for The Nomads.

They await the fourth round draw, and now look onto next week's Dafabet Welsh Premier League home fixture versus Port Talbot for a 2:30pm kick off.
