Nomads beat Bay in ten goal game

Connah’s Quay Nomads came out victors by seven goals to three in an entertaining pre-season clash against Colwyn Bay on Tuesday evening.

Nathan Woolfe, Matty Owen, Ryan Wignall, Declan Poole, George Horan and Michael Wilde all got on the scoresheet during a largely dominant and attacking display from The Nomads who had travelled to face Colwyn Bay of the Evo Stik North Division One.

The first goal of the game came just two minutes into play when, from a great cross from Wignall, Nathan Woolfe headed home to take the lead for The Nomads.

Matty Owen would follow up with Nomads’ second in the eighth minute, taking advantage of a defensive error to smash the ball into the net past the left of the keeper.

With the game starting rapidly, Colwyn Bay soon launched their own attacks with a long range effort beating John Danby to bring the score to 2-1.

However, Ryan Wignall, who was enjoying a fine performance on the left wing, sent a looping header over  the goalkeeper from eight yards to get Nomads’ third.

A confident Nomads side spent much of the first half in the Colwyn Bay half, with the likes of Michael Wilde and Matty Owen testing the goalkeeper at regular intervals to try and increase their goal tally.

The Nomads’ lead was extended in the 31st minute when captain George Horan converted a Nathan Woolfe corner with a close range header.

On the stroke of half time,  Declan Poole personified Nomads’ dominant performance when just minutes after coming on for Wignall he slotted into the bottom left corner to give his side a 5-1 lead at the interval.

The second half was a more even affair, with Colwyn Bay hitting Nomads on the counter to reduce the deficit to 5-2. With the game still a fast paced affair, the Seagulls scored another when a free kick was hammered into the top right corner on 66 minutes.

The Nomads hit back, with Declan Poole providing an impressive burst of pace to set up Wilde who with only the keeper to beat scored Nomads’
sixth with a controlled strike to the centre of the goal.

Nomads’ substitutions saw Callum Morris and Joe Heath replace Kai Edwards and Mike Pearson, with a trialist goalkeeper brought on for John Danby for the final ten minutes.

Matty Owen ended the game with a goal right on 90 minutes, sending a stunning 25 yard strike into the top left corner of the goal on a night when the Nomads’ midfielder could have scored more with a number of dangerous efforts.

The Nomads move onto their next pre season friendly away to Hyde United on Saturday 29 July for a 3:00pm kick off.
