Callum West scored twice as Connah’s Quay Nomads recorded their fifth straight Novira Cymru Premier win with a 2-0 victory over local rivals Flint Town United at the Essity Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday.
The Nomads were rewarded for their bright start to the derby and took the lead inside just 10 minutes as West tucked away the rebound from Abdi Sharif’s saved attempt.
West fully cemented himself as the derby day hero by doubling the advantage four minutes into the second half with a sensational lob from the halfway line - his eighth goal contribution in five games.
Flint halved the deficit late on through Harry Dean’s close-range finish, but there was to be late drama, with crucial saves from Chris Renshaw at key moments during the contest and a solid all-round and energetic display ensuring the Nomads took home all three points and climbed up to second in the Novira Cymru Premier table.

John Disney made three changes from Friday’s 3-0 win over Cambrian United as Dan Cowan made his first start of the season after returning from injury, while forwards Max Woodcock and Hussein Mehasseb also made their way back into the lineup. Frankie Deane, Rhys Watson and Mikey Stone were all named on the bench.
Flint manager Lee Fowler made just the one change from his side’s 1-1 draw away at Penybont three days ago as Tunde Owolabi replaced former Connah’s Quay striker Joe Malkin up front.
First Half
The Nomads made a promising start to the Flintshire derby and threatened on the attack with just one minute on the clock as Harry Franklin met Max Woodcock’s teasing cross but could only steer the ball over the bar. Joe Simatupang-Ferguson then went another one of his trademark solo runs as he broke through the Flint defence down the left-hand side, but his low ball narrowly averted Franklin inside the six-yard box.
We did not have to wait much longer for the opening goal though, as West was in the right place, at the right time to meet the rebound from Abdi Sharif’s saved effort and fire the Nomads ahead after 10 minutes played.
John Disney’s side continued to dominate the opening stages and came agonisingly close to a second goal just moments later as Woodcock’s low effort was blocked at the back post before Mehasseb’s flick from West’s free-kick looped onto the crossbar.
Chris Renshaw was forced into action for the first time in the contest on 28 minutes as he got down low to deny Isaac Modi’s low drive.
The Nomads quickly got back on the front foot and created another opportunity as captain James Jones laid the ball off to Franklin, whose powerful first-time strike forced a diving save from Jack Flint.
Second Half
It was the dream start to the second half for the Nomads as West doubled his and our tally for the afternoon. Flint tried to build up an attack from defence, but a tame pass from substitute Charlie Wilson was intercepted by West, who looked up once, spotted Jack Flint off his line and remarkably lobbed the goalkeeper from the halfway line to make it 2-0.
Flint enjoyed some possession as we reached the hour mark, but Renshaw made two more crucial saves to keep his clean sheet intact, while Cowan also made an important interception to prevent Owolabi a sight of goal from close range. The Nomads then made two changes as Mikey Stone and Darren Stephenson replaced Mehasseb and Woodcock.
Murray nearly added to his brace and assist from our win over Cambrian United on Friday as his strike from a tight angle was parried out by Jack Flint. The rebound bounced around inside the area, but Stephenson could only hook the ball over the top.
West then nearly claimed a derby day hat-trick in style as he received Alex Hughes’ pass on the edge of the area and tried to bend an effort into the far corner, but saw his strike fly inches wide.
Flint pulled a goal back deep into stoppage-time through Harry Dean’s close-range finish, but the Nomads were able to survive that late scare to earn a fifth consecutive league win.
