Egyptian football has become synonymous with talented forwards wearing red home kits, whether that be for club or country, and Hussein Mehasseb is now looking to write his own chapter at Connah’s Quay Nomads.
For a nation where football runs deep, those wearing red have provided plenty of memories - most notably Mohamed Salah, who has carried Egyptian hopes on the international stage while becoming one of the English Premier League’s greatest goalscorers in Liverpool colours.
Back home, Al Ahly have turned the same colour into a symbol of Egyptian football, becoming Africa’s most decorated club with over 150 official trophies, while the national team remain record seven-time winners of the Africa Cup of Nations.
It is a football-mad country with a proud history, and one Mehasseb knows well having previously represented Egypt at youth level.
Now, more than 2,000 miles away in North Wales, there is another red shirt he is hoping to make his mark in.
Cairo-born Mehasseb joined Connah’s Quay Nomads this summer as part of a fresh revolution under John Disney, along with many other new faces, including those also representing the club and their country.
“It means a lot having the support of people both in Wales and Egypt,” said Mehasseb. “I am very grateful for that, and one of my dreams is of course to represent the Egyptian national team having been part of the youth age groups.
“My family are huge sources of motivation and I appreciate the support from everyone back in Egypt. A lot of people from Egypt hope I do well and send me messages wishing me luck, so their support means so so much to me.”
On how well he and his teammates have bonded at Connah’s Quay Nomads this season, the Egyptian forward added: “There has been a very good team morale since I joined. We have a real togetherness and family feel which is really important when helping us achieve what we want to achieve.
“I feel like we are all on the same page trying to develop, learn off the coaching staff and of course also off each other so hopefully we can all benefit from this moving forward.”
Different backgrounds, different journeys and different experiences have all been brought together this season, and there is already a sense that everyone is pulling in the same direction.
Mehasseb has settled into life well at the Nomads, with regular full-time training sessions and regular minutes on the pitch helping him enjoy a bright start.
The 24-year-old contributed to six goals in four consecutive starts for the Nomads - a run which began in our narrow UEFA Conference League defeat away to FC Ballkani in Kosovo two months ago.
Mehasseb, who was also a young prospect at Scottish sides Rangers and Motherwell, added his name to the UEFA record books by becoming just the second Egyptian player ever to score in the UEFA Conference League, joining former Manchester City and current Tottenham Hotspur forward Omar Marmoush on the list.
At the time, this created another memorable link between Connah’s Quay Nomads and Man City as former City captain Andy Morrison famously led the Nomads to back-to-back Novira Cymru Premier titles in 2020 and 2021.
On his personal form so far this season, Mehasseb said: “I think I have started fairly well and I know of course that there is always a lot of room for improvement. The lads and coaching staff have been very welcoming, especially during the first few weeks when I signed, and this makes a big difference when settling in.
“I just want to continue helping the team in any way I can to try and get three points, and of course I hope to continue contributing with goals and assists.”
Mehasseb’s dream of one day earning another international call up to Egypt, which would add to his experience for the country at U20 level, is helped by the amount of time he is spending working on the football pitch.
The Nomads’ hybrid model, which now features over 10 players working on a full-time basis, has already proved successful in helping players earn international call ups as seen with Abdi Sharif’s journey with the Somalian national team in FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
“Spending more time with the coaching staff and teammates certainly helps us,” said Mehasseb. “I can definitely feel more of a bond since we are together pretty much daily.
“With more sessions under our belt, we are able to focus on specific individual and positional work, while also focusing on whoever our opposition is of course, so hopefully all that will help us become successful this season.”
