McCarthy's playing career started out at Hartlepool United before enjoying spells at teams including York City, Port Vale, Birmingham City, Sheffield Wednesday and Doncaster Rovers in a career which saw him amass over 580 appearances.

McCarthy also achieved 18 caps for the Northern Ireland International team, was a runner up in the League Cup with Birmingham City in 2001 and won the Conference North with Northwich Victoria in 2006.

McCarthy was manager of Chester between April 2016 and September 2017 and has recently been in the Assistant Manager role at Southport before joining The Nomads.

McCarthy commented; "I'm excited to be offered a new challenge to work with an outstanding group of players and staff. I'm really keen to start work within the training and matchday environment to add my own experiences to the group to build on the recent successes."

Head Coach, Craig Harrison added; "It's great to get Jon on board as my Assistant Manager. He has a lot of experience ranging from being a top player and full International, coaching in the Football League, Assistant Manager in the National League and Assistant Manager in the National League North and Managing in the National League as well.

He is a fantastic coach and brings lots to the training pitch and also has great enthusiasm and work ethic for the game. Jon also has a wealth of experience of players and contacts in the North West and beyond from the English pyramid."
